CONNECTION LOST

Autonomous photo series (2026)

SKILLS USED: concept development / styling / art direction / photography / image editing

Calling with my smartphone.
Checking the time on my smartphone.
Sending an email with my smartphone.
Listening to music on my smartphone.
Finding directions using my smartphone.
Shopping with my smartphone.
Locking my bike with my smartphone.
Turning on a light with my smartphone.

Easy and fast: everything on one device. Everything digital.
But can I still find my way without my smartphone?
Can I still tell when it's going to rain by looking at the clouds?
Am I just as happy with an email as with a postcard?
Doesn't tactility extend beyond my touchscreen?
Have I lost the connection?

The photo series is a reflection on my dependence on my smartphone. I decided to show daily activities in an old-fashioned analog way, but in every activity, I replaced an essential part by a screen.

All photos were taken in my studio without using AI. For the photo of the shopping basket, for example, I first took a picture of a shopping basket full of groceries (thanks to Albert Heijn for lending me a shopping basket!). Then I displayed that photo on the computer screen and held a bunch of bananas behind the screen. I then captured that with my camera.

Connection Lost has been selected by the Photographic Exploration Project and will be exhibited in the group exhibition Entanglement in august 2026 in Berlin. Click here for more information.
